3 Steps to get anyone’s email address
- Find your prospects’ company website address
- Find out the email patterns used by your prospects’ company
- Test your email patterns to find the right one
Step 1: Find your prospects’ company website address
When you open your prospect’s LinkedIn profile, you need to first get your prospect’s company website address. Because, you need the company website address to find the email domain. Most of the companies have the same company website and email domain.
On your prospect’s LinkedIn profile, click on the company (name) in which they are working. If in case, they are working in multiple companies, click on the company that you want to find email address.
You will be navigated to the LinkedIn Company page. Click on the “About” section on the left. On the right-hand side, you will see the company’s website. That’s Clue#1. Keep a note of that.
Step 2: Find out the email patterns used by your prospects’ company
All companies use a certain email pattern. In large companies, they will have a handful of email patterns that they use for everyone.
Some of the most common email patterns that are used are:
- firstname.lastname, as in email@example.com
- firstname, as in firstname.lastname@example.org
- firstname.lastInitial, as in email@example.com
You’ve probably noticed 10 other types of email patterns. And you’re right. We are now going to find out the email patterns for the company that we are interested in.
To find email patterns, I am going to use a search engine called DuckDuckGo. It is one of the best alternative search engines to Google. We prefer to use DuckDuckGo because, we need to perform a particular search that doesn’t work well on Google.
Open DuckDuckGo and just type in the last part of the company website address that you found in the previous step. Remove the “https://” & the “www.” and replace that with a @ sign and put the remaining in double-quotes.
For example, if your prospect’s company website address is “https://www.ey.com“, then in DuckDuckGo you will search for “@ey.com.” Ensure that you are using double quotes on both the sides because it is important.
Click this sample DuckDuckGo search and replace the text in the search box. Type in the website address of the company you are interested in.
You can see that the company has used the firstname.lastname email pattern. We now have Clue #2. (Tip: To get the search text highlighted just like I got in the image above, press Ctrl+F on your browser and type in the email domain – this makes things much easier!)
It is just the first page of your search result. Flip through the search results (web pages) to find more email patterns. Please find below the other email patterns that are used by ey.com:
Step 3: Test your email patterns to find the right one
Once you have found a few email patterns, you need to narrow down the right email pattern now. You will have to use another online tool to find the email pattern that is working.
Open www.mailtester.com. It is one of the oldest but effective tools used by expert email finders.
Enter the email pattern that you constructed in the previous step and click the “Check address” button. The results are displayed in a second, which looks like this (if you’re lucky!)
You have to look at the last line. It says that the Email address is valid which means it will work when you send an email to it. YOU’RE DONE!
If in case you get a message highlighted in red, it means that the email address is invalid or does not exist. You need to now try the next email pattern that you constructed in the previous step.
What if I didn’t get the right email address?
If you have found the right email address, Congratulations.
If you have not found the email address, there can be many reasons why you couldn’t find the right email address in your first attempt. Just like learning new things, you need to try some other email finding techniques until you get it right.
- People use Nicknames in their email: Robert may use firstname.lastname@example.org
- People may use their middle names: Tory may use Tory.s.Smith@company.com
- Some people might have left that company & forgot to update their LinkedIn profile. (it happens!)
- Companies might have country-specific email domains, such as @fr.ey.com and @uk.ey.com
- Most of the emails that you verify turn up as “Unknown” or “Server does not respond” (because free email verifiers have limitations)
